If there is no will and you should die, then the legal term is 'died intestate'.  In such an event, disposal of your estate (assets) will be subject to strict legal procedures which may take some considerable time, especially when there are concerns over the rightful heirs.  This can cause distress and lead to financial difficulties.

   TAX PLANNING & DEATH DUTIES

Another pain that your relatives may have to face is paying Inheritance Tax (or IHT) on whatever you do leave in your will to them after you pass away, or on gifts given to them in the seven years prior to your death.

Any assets that you leave to your spouse, or any amount that is less than £234,000* is covered by IHT but any sum over this is.

* this figure is subject to variation in accordance with various finance acts by the Government
